Dear parish family,

On behalf of my staff and brother clergy I would like to wish you and your loved ones a very blessed, healthy and joy filled 2017!

At the start of a new year it is customary to make a few resolutions for ourselves.  We are often very good at deciding what we want and need in our lives to make us happier and healthier.  We can be very organized with our life’s plans.  Unfortunately, in our desire to have everything planned out, we can leave an essential component out of the equation.  Perhaps one of our resolutions needs to be that we ask God what kind of changes or additions He wants in our lives.  Do we ask Him?

Pope Francis in a talk to youth encouraged his audience to make it a habit to ‘ask the Lord’ and let Him show you the way.’  He reminded them of the story from Old Testament where the young Samuel kept hearing the voice of the Lord who was calling him, but he did not understand or know what to say, yet with a bit of help, Samuel was able to say to God, 'Speak, Lord, for I am listening'.

Many have shared with me that they don’t want to “bother” God with their problems or their indecisions.  They are often silent because others may have greater problems and life decisions than their own.  Nothing in Scripture or in the Church has ever taught that God is too busy to listen.  The opposite, in fact, is true.

1 John 5:14

And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.

Psalm 66:17-20

Truly God has listened; he has attended to the voice of my prayer. Blessed be God, because he has not rejected my prayer or removed his steadfast love from me.

1 John 5:15

And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked for.

Hebrews 4:16

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

1 Peter 5:7

Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

John 16:24

Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

Psalm 139:1-4

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.

Happy New Year everyone!

Fr. Rick
